Steps in Obtaining an Initial or Standard Arkansas License (OnLine)

DO NOT submit this application until you have all coursework completed, have completed the IDEA professional development modules, have a satisfactory exit portfolio, completed electronic surveys, and all required testing.

BEFORE beginning this application, you must be prepared to pay the $75.00 license fee. You will not be able to submit your license application without entering your payment information. Have your credit/debit card ready.

 Step 1:  Click here to log into AELS             

• Select AELS Educator Login Site
• Select Apply for a Standard License
• Select First-time Licensure (recent graduate from an Arkansas institution)
• Select Arkansas Tech University

 Step 2: Complete the information requested on the pages that follow.

Part 1 – Background Check Information

• If the system does not indicate your background checks are completed, mark YES to indicate each is completed.
• Click the box to indicate that you acknowledge that all coursework must be documented by providing original college transcripts.

Part 2 - Profile Information

• Review your profile information. Use the Update button if you need to make changes.  Be sure to click Save if you make changes.
• In the Contact section, you must have at least one primary email and one primary phone number.
• Update your employment information if necessary.
• Cick the box to indicate all information is correct.
• Click Continue.

Part 3 – Application Information

• Complete the application information by accurately responding to the questions.
• Type your first and last name to serve as your electronic signature.
• Click Submit.

Part 4 – Fee Payment

• Click Make Payment and enter your payment information.
• Click Confirm, review your information and click SUBMIT.
• Print receipt.
• Click Continue License Application.

Note: Your license application has been submitted when you see the message “Your license application has been successfully submitted.”

  Step 3: Have an official transcript sent to the Department of Education

• Note: This is a very important step. The application process can't be completed without an official transcript.
• Request the Registrar's office to send official transcripts to DESE (ADE) by filling out a transcript request form here:

• Make sure you click the box labeled "ADE for Licensure Arkansas Department of Education"
• If your degree has not posted yet, make sure to indicate "After degree is posted for the current semester" on the form.
• Send the completed form back to the Registrar's office via email, mail, or fax. (Contact info is on the bottom left corner of the form.)

What do I need to be eligible for a provisional license?

Note: If you are a candidate that has graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree and need a provisional license for special circumstances (i.e. still trying to pass the PLT while working as a teacher), this process will be different for you.  Please contact Kim Tate at ktate4@atu.edu for further instructions.  

1. Letter of Intent to Hire from the school district. 
2. Copies of transcripts for both undergraduate and/or graduate work. Click here to access a Transcript Request form.
3. Passing Praxis subject assessment(s) for your content area.
4. Approved AELS Background check less than one (1) year old at the time of licensing.
5. Completion of all required Arkansas IDEAS learning modules. Verify you have completed all of them using the chart below. Once you complete these, please go to your Record of Learning in your IDEAS account and email it to Ms. Kim Tate at ktate4@atu.edu.

* If you are in the MAT, MTLL-NTL program, completion of required Ethics training (listed below in Step 1).

** Secondary/Middle-School Social Studies candidates ONLY must also have taken a required Arkansas History course OR have completed an appropriate IDEAS training replacement.

How do I submit my application?

Step 1:  Submit the required documentation listed below for review. Click HERE to upload documents.

1. Ethics Training Verification PDF  -  If you are a MAT, MTLL-NTL candidate, complete the following three courses on Arkansas IDEAS.  Once you've completed all IDEAS training modules, click HERE to fill out your DESE Ethics Training verification PDF form. (Save a copy of the completed form and submit it in your upload "packet.")

     • ERC 19048 - Professional LIcensure Standards board (PLSB) - The Code of Ethics Training Video (2018)

     • TCC 14435 - Professional Licensure Standards Board (PLSB) Social Media Guidelines

2. Proof of Intent to Hire from the district.  Please download and have your employer complete the Provisional Recommendation form.  You will be asked to upload this form and submit it with your provisional packet.  

3. PDF copy of Passing Praxis subject assessment score(s).

4. Record of Learning PDF for IDEAS professional development certificates.

 

Step 2:  Send DESE (ADE) your official Undergraduate and/or Graduate Transcripts.

Step 3: Submit the online application for provisional license by logging in below.

1. SELECT Applying for Provisional License.
2. What type of Provisional License am I seeking?  Provisional Non-Traditional MAT.
3. SELECT your Education Preparation Program:  Arkansas Tech University.
4. Verify your Profile information is accurate and complete.  Update if necessary.
5. Review application information. Electronically sign and submit.

Dr. Bell will verify your eligibility to apply for a provisional license and will forward the required supporting documents to the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. Allow 2-3 weeks for your application to be processed and your license issued.
