ATU Honors program

Our purpose

Arkansas Tech University's Honors Program is designed to elevate the college learning experience. To maintain a sense of community and enhance personal learning skills, honors courses are conscientiously designed to be small in size and to promote interaction, not only with peers, but with professors as well. Students admitted into the Honors program are not only educated for their university years, they are educated for life.

what you need to apply to honors

  • Must already be Admitted to Tech - this is the first step
    • Graduating senior and admitted as first-time entering undergraduate on the main campus
  • Minimum high school cumulative GPA of 3.50, and
  • Either top 10% of your graduating class OR a minimum ACT Composite score of 27

 

WHAT TO SUBMIT

  1. Complete the online Honors application process for Consideration by December 15.
    1. Early Admission to the University (you need to first be admitted to Tech)
      An early admission file includes an application for undergraduate admission and current high school transcript with a qualifying GPA and ACT/SAT exam score. The application for undergraduate admission and all supporting documentation must be on completed and processed in order to apply for University Honors. If using rank in class to qualify for Honors, rank must be documented on the transcript received.
    2. Proof of Critical Writing Skills in your Honors Application 
  2. We review the files of admitted freshmen who have an Honors Application on file, including essay, beginning at noon on December 15.
  3. We will begin notifying students of next steps after January 1.
  4. You cannot apply to Honors until after you have been admitted to Tech.

The University Honors selection process is highly competitive; therefore, students who apply for the University Honors Program will also be considered for regular academic scholarships. If accepted into the University Honors Program, recipients will be awarded a University Honors Stipend.

Honors Application process

The Application Period for the current Academic Year will open by October 18. Late Applications are not accepted.

If you applied, please check your TECH email regularly as we hope to announce interview times later in the semester.
Interviews will be held during the first full week of January.

The University Honors Program at Arkansas Tech University provides an enriched intellectual experience for students with outstanding educational talents and leadership potential. At Arkansas Tech University, the honors student will benefit from opportunities to interact with other highly-motivated students and outstanding professors in the challenging atmosphere of small, innovative honors classes specially designed to foster rational inquiry, critical thinking, and analytical skills.

Applicants interested in applying to the Honors Program should submit the University Honors Program application, including the required essay by DECEMBER 15 at 12:00 NOON (CST). You cannot save and resume this application at a later time; you must complete it in one sitting. If you have any questions, or need assistance, please contact the Arkansas Tech University Honors Program.

You must have an early admit status to the University and created your OneTech account in order to complete the Honors Program application. *Please note it could take up to a week to receive your acceptance and log in information.* You must log in with your NEW atu.edu email. 

Essay Prompts: 

You will be asked to copy and paste a typed essay of 300-500 words on one of the topics below on the application. Please do not submit an essay that has been used for a scholarship or essay competition. Please submit your own, original work. Choose only one topic for your essay response.

  1. Write a thank-you letter to someone in your life. Express your gratitude, and detail what you appreciate and why it is important to you.
  2. Write a response to this statement: "I intend to change the world by...".
  3. Write a response to this statement: "The one thing I failed at was..." and explain how the experience changed your outlook.
