Costa Rica is a country with varied ecosystems. With 28% of it's land protected by national parks, Costa Rica is a leader in rainforest conservation. Additionally, Costa Rica is a leader in tropical agriculture with crops including, coffee, cacao, pineapple, banana, and plantain as well as livestock production in the Guanacaste Region. This study abroad program will include visiting the central highlands, the Caribbean coast, as well as the Pacific coast. The emphasis of this program will be to introduce students to the varied ecosystems, tropical agriculture, and the impact of eco -tourism on the country of Costa Rica...Pura Vida!

May 9th - May 17th, 2023
Day 1: Travel day to Atenas, Costa Rica.
Day 2: Visit the local market in Atenas, coffee tour and learn about sustainable coffee practices and conscious consumerism. In the afternoon students will have a cooking class then visit Rodriguez Sustainable Agriculture Farm.
Day 3: Visit Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center and learn about wildlife rehabilitation, later visit Orotina Fruit Market and Carara National Park. Travel to Quepos, Costa Rica
Day 4: Visit Manuel Antonio Park and enjoy a guided wildlife viewing tour. In the afternoon students will enjoy time at the beach.
Day 5: Half a day whitewater rafting, in the afternoon visit the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center
Day 6: Botanical Garden tour and Ruta del Cacao Tour
Day 7: Visit Basilica in Cartago, travel to San Jose and enjoy a guided tour at the National Museum, shopping at Mercado Central
Day 8: Visit Costa Rican Cocoa and the Jade Museum
Day 9: Travel home to the United States
Moderate/Strenuous: Participants should expect to spend multiple hours engaging in physical activity such as hiking or snorkeling. Some days might require more physical activity such as a full day or snorkeling or hiking on steep terrain. However, some optional activities such as whitewater rafting will be a Moderate/Strenuous activity level
