ATU's biology program prepares students for careers in healthcare, research and environmental sustainability. Our program produces well - qualified graduates through rigorus education and hands-on experiences.
The Department of Biological Sciences promotes academic excellence and varied instructional approaches to foster the development of life-long learning in Arkansas Tech University students. The Department strives to: meet the general education needs of all undergraduates; provide specialized academic instruction appropriate for Departmental majors; and address ancillary instructional requirements beyond the scope of general education for outside majors. Departmental faculty contribute scholarly works to the wide array of disciplines embraced by our varied programs and degree offerings. The Department also provides expertise to individuals, academic entities, and professional societies.
BIOMEDICAL
This track will serve students interested in medical school, dental school, physical and occupational therapy schools, pharmacy school, nuclear medicine technology, medical laboratory science, veterinary school and optometry school. This track will include a new Advanced Certificate in Biology.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE TRACK
The Environmental Science track provides excellent preparation for careers in federal, state and local government, public utilities and nonprofit sectors and industries. Additionally, this program will prepare students for graduate study in a variety of related fields such as ecology and environmental science.
ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION TRACK
This program is designed with the flexibility to prepare students for a career within the biology field upon graduation or for graduate school should they choose to pursue that path. The track is broad in nature and allows students to specialize in an area of biology of their choosing.
APPLIED STATISTICS TRACK
This track will include the Certificate of Applied Statistics offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and would prepare graduates to conduct advanced statistical analyses of biological data. Employment opportunities are excellent and include working as a healthcare biostatistician, pharmaceutical data analysist, data scientist in the private sector, genomics and bioinformatics analyst, and environmental statistician.

Students in the Department of Biological Sciences, except for Allied Health Science (AHS) program majors, are required to complete a common core consisting of:
Graduating seniors, except those in AHS programs, will be required to complete the Major Field Achievement Test (MFAT) in Biology as part of the assessment plan for the Department. Students will take the test during assessment week of the semester of planned graduation.
