The Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management is designed to provide an interdisciplinary course of study to educate students in the skills and practices of emergency planning and management associated with homeland security. Some of these issues include natural disasters, chemical incidents, biological episodes, radiological occurrences, and terrorist events. This program combines various aspects of the social and natural sciences along with administrative skills to prepare students for careers in these very important disciplines of homeland security. Additionally, technology is utilized throughout the curriculum. Students completing this major will achieve competencies required for emergency management and related professions.
Besides the 37 hours of General Education Courses, there are three main categories of courses to be completed by EAM majors:
- Technical Specialty
- Administrative/Professional Core
- Interdisciplinary Core
Forty-two hours of courses are required in the Technical Specialty. These courses are offered in the Emergency Administration and Management department. In addition, all students take 6 hours of practicum and 6 hours of externship, which apply toward the 42 required hours of the Technical Specialty coursework.
The Administrative/Professional Core includes classes in fields such as accounting, management, computers, and communications. Fifteen hours are required in this category.
The Interdisciplinary Core requires 21 hours of coursework in both the natural and physical sciences. Students also have the option of addressing the Interdisciplinary core by completing a minor in an approved area as long as the total coursework equals 21 hours.
Classes are available in residence on the Tech campus in Russellville or through distance education. The online program has been approved by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
